A COVID-Free Look Back at the Top Stories in 2020

The Leaning Tower of Dallas was born on Feb. 16 when the planned implosion of the former Affiliated Computer Services building didn t fully collapse upon detonation. When the dust settled the building s core, containing the stairwell and elevator shaft, remained upright at an angle. For the next two weeks, people traveled from near and far to take whimsical photographs with the tower in the background. The building finally collapsed in a cloud of dust on March 2 after two weeks of being whacked with a 5,600-pound wrecking ball. Jason & Jenn Baskett Halley, age 7, was excited to get a chance to see Dallas’ own Leaning Tower after hearing about the implosion gone wrong on the radio and the news. 2020 KDH top stories of the year

For many, perhaps everyone, 2020 will go down as a year they’d rather forget. However, the huge news that came in 2020 is unforgettable. By March, the coronavirus had swept into the world, the nation and Central Texas, drastically changing the way people work, shop, eat and live. It ushered in changes to the Killeen-Fort Hood area that will likely leave lasting impacts to the local landscape. It impacted everyone. A month later, on April 22, a Fort Hood soldier went missing. Frantic searches, protests, blame and a national spotlight on Fort Hood followed. Eventually it was discovered that Spc. Vanessa Guillen had been reportedly killed by a fellow soldier. Her body was found more than two months later near the Leon River south of Temple.

The “#IAmVannesaGuillèn” bill would create an independent agency that would allow active-duty service members to report sexual harassment and assault.Win McNamee /TNS The military is supposed to protect us, but in a startling reversal, it is female service members who need protection from the military. The body of Vanessa Guillén, a 20-year-old soldier stationed at Fort Hood, was discovered on June 30, more than two months after she had gone missing.

Fort Hood Soldiers Skeptical of Army s Accountability Efforts

The committee also determined that Fort Hood took an “ad hoc approach” to the well-being of soldiers who fail to report to duty. Soldiers are often automatically listed as AWOL, with the Army making little attempt to locate them; noncommissioned officers told The Intercept in October that they had few tools to help those under their command who disappeared from base. Guillén was listed as AWOL even though she’d left behind her keys and military ID, and her car was still parked at the barracks. Altogether, the committee made 70 recommendations. “This report, without a doubt, will cause the Army to change our culture,” McCarthy said at the Pentagon briefing, where he announced that he would also appoint senior Army officials to lead a “People First Task Force” to further study and implement the recommendations Army-wide.
