Doctors at a Weston practice are urging people not to ‘suffer in silence’ and to seek help with mental health issues by speaking to their GP.
Horizon Health Centre, in Lonsdale Avenue, appointed two new mental health practitioners during the pandemic to help increase the support they offer to the population.
The community psychiatric nurse and mental health worker are seeing around 30 patients a day at Horizon Health Centre and are providing a more holistic approach to mental health.
Laurence Loz Colbert of Oxford band Ride has made recordings of the dawn chorus in an ancient forest for this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week. Drummer Mr Colbert and fellow sound artist Richard Bentley rose at 3.30am on May 2 – International Dawn Chorus Day – to travel to Singe Wood, near Hailey, and Wigwell Nature Reserve in Charlbury, to capture the sounds. Ride was one of the most influential bands of the early 90s and Mr Colbert been interested in “situations with microphones” since a child. He has lately been exploring the relationship between sound and architecture as part of a PhD at Oxford Brookes.

Jordan Phillip A DAD has shared his story about losing his son to suicide during Mental Health Awareness Week. In the last 12 months North Yorkshire Police has recorded 32,117 incidents where mental health has been a factor - that’s up 543 incidents a month and 6,512 incidents in a year. Police have shared the story of a Harrogate dad about losing his beloved son Jordan Phillip. His dad Steve said: “You always think these things won’t come knocking on your door, it happens to other people and then one day your world is shattered into a million pieces.

Lockdowns, remote working, mounting economic uncertainty and fear of the virus: the events of the past year have had a far-reaching impact on our mental health as a nation. Even the easing of restrictions has become worry-inducing for many after a year of isolation.
However, whilst compounding pressures have left many struggling, they have also importantly pushed the topic of mental health to the forefront, encouraging organisations to reflect on if they are doing enough to support employees. As things slowly return to (new) normal, it is paramount that these conversations continue – and Mental Health Awareness Week provides the perfect opportunity to do just that.
