Effective Tuesday, families can apply for up to $6,000 a year to help cover the cost of therapies, special equipment or other support for children aged seven to twelve. The province is also doubling the allowance for children from birth to age six from $4,000 to $8,000 per year.

Social Services Minister Lori Carr said the funding, expected to cost $10.3 million in this fiscal year, will help families afford assorted therapies, equipment and respite support depending on a child’s individual needs. The Ministry expects the funding expansion to benefit approximately 1,000 families.

At a news conference Monday for the signing of a new health memorandum of understanding for Lloydminster, Minister of Rural and Remote Health Everett Hindley was asked about the provincial response to the situation at Hatchet Lake. Hindley said they are “watching the situation at Hatchet Lake very closely” and noted there was a briefing that morning with Minister of Health Paul Merriman and their officials. He said they were working closely with people on the ground in Hatchet Lake in terms of what they require for support. He also said officials are focusing on immunization and ensuring vaccines are available to rural and remote areas of the province, including the North.
