Sullivan County nursing home contends with outbreak

UNITY A COVID-19 outbreak at Sullivan County nursing home grew this week, according to the facility’s administrator.
Ten residents and four workers have now tested positive, Ted Purdy, the facility’s administrator, said in a Friday update to families.
That total includes one resident and one employee on the facility’s MacConnell unit who tested positive last week. Those first positive tests led to testing of all residents and employees this week.
Symptoms are “relatively mild” and include cold symptoms and low-grade fever, Purdy said in an email.
The facility remains in outbreak status and visitors aren’t allowed in. Full personal protective equipment is being used on the affected units, which in addition to MacConnell includes Stearns II.

Take care in smoke haze, Department of Health urges
The Department of Health has urged the public to take the necessary health precautions in response to smoke caused by prescribed burns.
Exposure to smoke from fires can exacerbate asthma and other respiratory conditions, cause coughing and shortness of breath, and temporarily irritate the eyes, nose and throat.
The Department of Health advises a number of precautions should be taken to minimise exposure to environmental smoke if people consider themselves to be at-risk.
People are advised to:

UNITY The Sullivan County nursing home has returned to outbreak status after a fully vaccinated resident and an employee tested positive for COVID-19, according to the facility’s administrator.
The resident lives in the MacConnell building, where the employee who tested positive also works, wrote Ted Purdy, the Unity facility’s administrator in a Wednesday COVID-19 update for families and friends.
Now that the facility is on outbreak status, full personal protective equipment is required on the MacConnell unit and social visitation has been postponed.

Weekly testing of staff had resumed on Tuesday due to the positivity rate in Sullivan County being above 5%. Now, due to the positive cases, weekly testing of residents also is resuming.
