LOS ANGELES, CA As new COVID-19 cases surge to levels not seen since the winter in Los Angeles, county health officials acknowledged that breakthrough cases represent an increasingly larger share of positive tests.
During the month of June, 20 percent of all new COVID-19 infections occurred among fully vaccinated people, Los Angeles County Public Health Department officials announced. It represents a spike from 11 percent in May and 5 percent in April.
The climbing numbers likely stem from the fact that more people are vaccinated and the community transmission is climbing, according to health officials. The COVID-19 vaccines continue to have much higher efficacy rates than common inoculations such as the flu vaccine. The vaccination effort has staved off what would otherwise be a massive surge as the delta variant spreads.
