WELLINGTON, July 29 (Xinhua) More than 1,000 New Zealanders have had bowel cancer, New Zealand s second-most-common cause of death from cancer, detected under the government s National Bowel Screening Program, Health Minister Andrew Little said on Thursday.
More than 1,200 New Zealanders died from bowel cancer in 2017. The screening program aims to save lives by catching it early, giving patients a greater chance of survival, Little said in a statement. New Zealand has one of the highest rates of bowel cancer in the developed world and that s why we need this program, he said.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says an extension to the Bay of Islands Hospital in Kawakawa will help address inequitable health outcomes for Māori in the north.
Ms Ardern and Health Minister Andrew Little were on hand yesterday for a ceremony to bless the site and workers for the new building, which will house outpatients and primary care facilities as well as the expanded renal care and new oncology and haematology services.

New Zealand nurses vote on third sellout offer About 30,000 nurses, healthcare assistants and hospital-based midwives are currently voting on a third pay offer from New Zealand’s District Health Boards (DHBs). Voting ends tomorrow. Members of the New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) held an eight-hour nationwide strike on June 9 after rejecting two previous offers that would have lifted wages by just 1.38 percent, less than half the current rate of inflation. The NZNO provoked widespread anger among nurses when it cancelled a strike scheduled for July 29 before presenting the new proposed multi-employer collective agreement (MECA) for a vote. The offer does not address low wages or the increasingly desperate staffing crisis in public hospitals caused by decades of underfunding.

Research into some of New Zealanders’ biggest health concerns including cancer, diabetes, and heart disease is getting crucial support in the latest round of health research funding, Health Minister Andrew Little announced today.
The funding, awarded through the Health Research Council of New Zealand, covers 31 General Project grants ($36.64 million), five Rangahau Hauora Māori grants ($5.91 million), five Pacific Project grants ($5.79 million), and four Programme grants ($19.99 million).
