Vietnam seeks World Bank aid for Covid-19 vaccine development

Vietnam suggested Tuesday that the World Bank supports the nation’s Covid-19 vaccine development and vaccination program with grants and loans.
Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long made the suggestion at a meeting with Victoria Kwakwa, World Bank Regional Vice President for East Asia and the Pacific, and Carolyn Turk, the World Bank Country Director for Vietnam.
While Vietnam is one of 39 countries with a National Regulatory Authority (NRA) on vaccine regulation that meets WHO standards as also one of 44 countries capable of producing vaccines, there has been little investment for such a field, Long said.

Samsung Electronics Co. reportedly donated about 2.8 billion won (US$2.48 million) to the central and provincial governments in Vietnam earlier this month, with some 480 million won provided to Bac Ninh Province. Vietnam is the largest smartphone production base for Samsung, the world s leading smartphone vendor. Following Samsung, SK Group, South Korea s third-largest conglomerate, also donated $1 million to the Vietnamese government last week. Vietnamese Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long thanked the companies for their support to Vietnam s national vaccine fund that will be used for the procurement, research and development of COVID-19 vaccines, South Korean Embassy officials said.
