The letters that arrive to the Press Herald Toy Fund can be heartbreaking. And, while most parents ask that their personal stories not be shared, the letters taken together are a reflection of the times.
During down economic cycles, the common theme is job loss. In overheated real estate markets, it’s evictions and homelessness. Last year, for unknown reasons, there was a noticeable increase in letters from families escaping domestic violence.
This year, of course, it’s COVID-19, which seems to have made all of the other problems significantly worse.

The new chairman of Maldon District Council is reflecting on the last year in his latest column. Councillor Mark Heard wrote: For most of us 2020 has been the most unusual year imaginable; nothing could have prepared us to be as affected by COVID-19 as we have. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the well-recognised high-profile key workers whether they be scientists, doctors, teachers or food carriers and we showed our gratitude as we stood on our doorsteps and clapped for carers. “Sometimes ‘normality’ goes unrecognised until something goes wrong - but I want you to know the business of Maldon District Council has continued - almost uninterrupted - and the service we provide has continued to shine brightly. We have a great team!
