Report: Big Tobacco targets youth, communities of color in Solano
FAIRFIELD More menthol cigarettes are sold in Solano than any other county in the state, the result – officials said – of a targeted marketing strategy toward communities of color and youth.
“Solano County – one of the most diverse counties in the country – has become a leading target of the tobacco industry,” Kirbee Brooks, the county Tobacco Prevention Project coordinator, said in a statement released Thursday by the county administration.
“Big Tobacco aggressively promotes menthol cigarettes, particularly among communities of color and the young. Mentholated tobacco products are typically aimed at people of color and our youth because menthol temporarily masks the harshness of tobacco smoke, making it easier for new users to get hooked,” he said in the statement.
Area activist groups and businesses are seeking to defend the Biden administrationâs pause on federal oil and gas leasing from legal challenges in court.
A coalition of 21 conservation and other groups have filed motions to intervene in lawsuits brought by the state of Wyoming and the Western Energy Alliance to contest the leasing moratorium. Among the groups are the Western Colorado Alliance, the Carbondale-based Wilderness Workshop, Citizens for a Healthy Community in Paonia and the Valley Organic Growers Association in the North Fork Valley.
A handful of companies also have separately moved to intervene to defend the moratorium, including Roan Creek Ranch, Aspen Skiing Co., the Thistle Whistle Farm in Delta County, and Western Spirit Cycling in Moab, Utah.

Though skeptical, Jason Greenough and Beau Smith will lead a committee exploring the development of a tobacco retail license for Crescent City.
Crescent City’s mayor and his colleague on the City Council said they were unwilling to dictate how businesses should run. But they were willing to give Amber Wier, program director for NorCal 4 Health, who brought the proposed tobacco retail license to the Council’s attention Monday, a chance to change their minds.
“From what the Council has been saying, it sounds like we want to at least explore the possibilities before we make the final decision on this,” Greenough said. “But I’m very hesitant to create another hoop our businesses have to jump through to do business in the State of California. It’s already difficult to do business in this state because of the strident regulations we have here.”

Farmers and ranchers, conservation, recreation, and tribal groups filed motions to intervene today to defend the Biden administrationâs pause on federal oil and gas leasing pending the Department of Interiorâs comprehensive review of the program. With this action, the groups seek to defend the leasing pause against two lawsuits filed by Wyoming and the Western Energy Alliance. The coalition argues this is the legal and necessary first step to a long-overdue review of the federal oil and gas leasing and permitting program.Â
