LANSING, Mich. - Healthy women are the cornerstone of healthy societies, and improving the health of Michigan women and girls has the potential to drive health improvements for all communities across the state. To help reaffirm the state s commitment to improving the health of all Michigan women, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is joining with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and Michigan Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health in proclaiming May as Women s Health Month. The health of every woman in Michigan is crucial to the overall well-being of our state, said Governor Whitmer. By designating May as Women s Health Month, we recognize the urgency of using state investments to drive equality and expand access to healthcare by removing as many barriers as possible. In February 2021, the city of Fort Wayne distributed $398,000 to seven non-profit organizations to provide support and assistance with the COVID-19 pandemic. The organizations include Wellspring, YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne, Healthier Moms & Babies, The League for the Blind & Disabled, Health Visions Midwest, Community Transportation Network and Amani Family Services.
With financial assistance from the Fort Wayne community, Amani Family Services, a private nonprofit organization in Fort Wayne which supports multicultural families and individuals, has been working hard to ensure these populations receive the support they need.
Amani received the second highest grant, at $106,811, which will be allocated toward helping around 300 immigrants and refugees in northeast Indiana. The organization plans to do this through hiring a case manager who will help with outreach and educational activities, an

Giving a voice to Latina immigrant mothers affected by COVID-19
For several years, PhD student Abigail Palmer Molina has focused her dissertation study on the experiences of mothers participating in an intervention for maternal depression, implemented as part of the Head Start program in South Los Angeles. The majority of the mothers were Latina immigrants, and Palmer Molina looked at their experiences to provide a richer picture of the intervention’s effectiveness. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit last year, she was compelled to find out how these women, and their communities, were being affected.
“I just needed to know how they were doing,” Palmer Molina said. “This is already a disadvantaged group that’s very precarious. They have a lot of different stressors, so what does the pandemic represent for them?”
