Location
The River Thur is located in NE Switzerland, draining the front ranges of the Swiss NE Limestone Alps (south of the Bodensee basin). It is a tributary of the R. Rhine which flows into the North Sea.
Geology
The Thur catchment is a mainly Limestone dominated alpine headwater, whereas the pre-alpine lowlands are dominated by ‘Molasse’-Sandstones and Pleistocene unconsolidated sediments.
It is a primarily rural catchment with agricultural activity focussing on the lowlands and scattered settlements. St. Gallen (72,000 inhabitants) and Frauenfeld (23,000 inhabitants) are the largest towns in the Thur catchment.
I wish to thank Dr. Katherine Trebeck and Dr. Dirk Philipsen for their response to our lead essay. It is a pleasure to discuss important ideas with scholars who are searching for the truth and human betterment. I agree that humanity still faces many problems, but I ask, along with the British historian Thomas Babington Macaulay, “On what principle is it that with nothing but improvement behind us, we are to expect nothing but deterioration before us.”[1] Below, I outline a number of ways in which the world has become a better place over the last few decades and propose that many people are already living in a Wellbeing Econ

It was an especially bad year for wildfires on the U.S. West Coast. Five of California’s 10 largest wildfires on record happened in 2020, and the state set a new record for acres burned. According to CAL FIRE, the state’s Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, more than 9,600 wildfires burned nearly 4.2 million acres through mid-December, causing more than 30 fatalities and damaging or destroying nearly 10,500 structures.
