Top 5 seasons in White Sox history

share-square-367169 CHICAGO Here’s a look at the Top 5 seasons in White Sox history, along with a few White Sox teams who just missed. 1. 1917 The White Sox have won three World Series titles but have won 100 games exactly one time in franchise history a total reached via a 100-54-2 record in ’17. A team featuring catcher Ray Schalk, second baseman Eddie Collins, third baseman Buck Weaver and Shoeless Joe Jackson in the outfield beat the New York Giants in six games to claim baseball’s top prize. Eddie Cicotte stood No. 1 on the pitching staff with 28 wins, 29 complete games, a 1.53 ERA and seven shutouts, while Red Faber, Lefty Williams and Reb Russell also made strong mound contributions. Faber earned the wins in Games 2, 5 and 6 of the World Series and lost Game 4.

Sunday Notes: Garrett Richards Has Elite Spin, But His Sinker May Hold the Key

February 7, 2021 Garrett Richards has an uncanny ability to spin a baseball. Per Statcast, the 32-year-old right-hander recently signed to a free-agent contract by the Boston Red Sox was 99th percentile in curveball spin last year, while his four-seam spin ranked in the 97th percentile. Moreover, the most-effective weapon in his arsenal, a 2,746-RPM slider, was topped only by Sergio Romo’s 2,913 RPMs among hurlers who threw the pitch at least 200 times. Richards’s least-effective offering in 2020 was a two-seamer that’s hard to put a positive spin on. The erstwhile San Diego Padre threw 66 of them, and the ones that were put into play tended to get punished. Opposing hitters whacked them to a tune of a .467 batting average and an .867 slugging percentage. And it was even worse in 2019. While a 28-pitch sample obviously needs to be taken with a huge grain of salt, numbers like .500 and .875 stand out like a sore thumb. I asked Richards about his plans going forward, antici

A Candidate-by-Candidate Look at the 2021 Hall of Fame Election Results

The following article is part of Jay Jaffe’s ongoing look at the candidates on the BBWAA 2021 Hall of Fame ballot. For a detailed introduction to this year’s ballot, and other candidates in the series, use the tool above; an introduction to JAWS can be found here. All WAR figures refer to the Baseball-Reference version unless otherwise indicated. The surge via which the Baseball Writers Association of America elected a record 22 Hall of Fame candidates over a seven-year span is over, as the voters pitched a shutout on Tuesday, their second in the past decade, fourth since the return to annual balloting in 1966, and ninth since the Hall’s inception in 1936. Collectively the 401 voters who participated showed enough ambivalence towards the top four returning candidates  Curt Schilling, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, and Omar Vizquel, all of whom have non-performance-related marks against them that were increasingly aired during the cycle  to keep them on the outside looking in,
