MIDDLETOWN Opening day at the Orange County Fair on July 15 featured the Royal Hanneford Circus; the Dock Dogs Show of swimming dogs; Banana Derby Capuchin monkeys riding dogs like jockeys while the dogs race and plenty of rides and amusements, including concerts and a petting zoo.
Later in the week, fairgoers can see monster truck shows and fireworks on the evenings of July 16, 23 and 30.
The fair runs July 15-Aug. 1 at the Orange County Fairgrounds, 239 Wisner Ave. in the town of Wallkill.
Toby Keith performs on the Grandstand Stage at 7 p.m. on Aug. 1. For this show, following New York state guidelines, all attendees must show proof of vaccination or proof of a negative COVID test within 72 hours in order to gain admission.
Senator Dave Min (D-Irvine) announced his Senate Bill (SB) 264, which would end the sale of ammunition, guns and ghost guns on state-owned property, passed out of the Assembly Public Safety Committee. If signed into law, SB 264 would effectively put a stop to most gun shows on county fairgrounds.
“I’m proud our gun violence prevention bill passed out of the Assembly Public Safety Committee today,” Min said. “Study after study shows more guns in our communities lead to more gun violence. Gun shows not only increase the presence of guns in our communities but also circumvent gun safety laws and encourage the sale of ghost guns gun precursor parts that are virtually untraceable for law enforcement.

Independence Day celebrations are returning to the Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort. Activities this Fourth of July will include an inflatable water park; watersports rentals such as kayaks, pedal boats and stand-up paddleboards; food trucks; live music; and a fireworks show set to begin at 9 p.m.
Admission is free, but food, beverages, on-site parking and rental costs will vary. Parking will be available the day of on-site until sold out for $50 a vehicle. VIP parking will be available for $100. Free street parking is limited.

‘Let Freedom Ring’ is theme of the Old Glory Boat Parade Sunday
The Old Glory Boat Parade, organized by the American Legion Yacht Club, is returning to Newport Harbor this Sunday. It will follow a path similar to the annual Christmas Boat Parade around Newport Harbor, starting at 1 p.m.
