Today is: Armed Forces Day
Staff reports
Armed Forces Day pays tribute to those serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, including those in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard, as well as those in the National Guard and Reserve. It takes place during Armed Forces Week, which begins the Saturday before the day, and during National Military Appreciation Month, which also includes holidays such as Military Spouse Appreciation Day, V-E Day, and Memorial Day.
On July 26, 1947, President Truman signed the National Security Act, which brought the branches of the military under the National Military Establishment. It was renamed the Department of Defense in 1949. President Truman issued a proclamation calling for the first celebration to be held on May 20.

On May 15 more than 70 countries celebrate Armed Forces Day. The day honors the serving members of the military. In the U.S. we honor the members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and the Space Force.
In the United States, Armed Forces Day was established in August of 1949 and first celebrated on May 20, 1950, under President Truman. It was first labeled a national holiday by President Kennedy in 1962. It is celebrated on the third Saturday of May at the end of Armed Forces Week.
In establishing the celebration, President Truman wished to convey the appreciation of the nation for the Armed Forces that protect our way of life and promote peace throughout the world and recognize our troops at home and across the sea. Celebrating Armed Forces Day was also designed as a morale boost for the troops.

May is a significant month for the military in terms of scheduled observances. And the military, through the operations at Travis Air Force Base, is an integral part of the local community.
The base in Fairfield had a total economic impact in the 2016 federal fiscal year of $1.65 billion. It’s the latest economic impact study from the base and covers the time period of Oct. 1, 2015, through Sept. 30, 2016.
Base operations have expanded since then, to include work to prepare Travis for the new KC-46 Pegasus refueling aircraft.
Nearly half of those who work at the base live off base and as such are members of the local communities.
