SOUTH PARIS – Jane Y. Gibson of South Paris died peacefully at Stephens Memorial Hospital after a brief bout with pneumonia. She was 93.
The day before she died, Jane was preparing for Christmas, a favorite holiday. She sat in her kitchen writing cards and watching the birds outside her window. She made date nut bread with her caretaker, Linda Smith, read the New York Times on the computer, and watched the sunset. Her body was failing her, but her mind remained as keen as ever.

Beat’s Writer’s Wrap-up 2020: Our inquisitive music critics tell us their favourite releases of the year From left to right - Phoebe Bridgers, Perfume Genius and Tame Impala
We spotlight the best releases of the year through the eyes of our writers.
2020… what a disaster. Thank fuck we can say goodbye to the absolute slime ball that’s been the last 12 months and look towards 2021 through a positive lens. Fingers crossed ol’ mate COVID decides to take a backseat and then we’re off to the races with gigs, festivals and events allowed to operate freely enough.
Before we get to 2021, we thought we’d take a look back at the year that was but through the eyes of our wisest investigators – our writers. Spotlighting their top ten albums, top five songs and a few other interesting miscellanea, this is the traditional Beat’s Writer’s Wrap-up but in digital form.
2020 has been a year unlike anything else we ve ever experienced.
The past 12 months have pushed us all to the brink, changing the role music plays in our lives in the process.
It s not exactly been a pleasant experience - we can say that with some certainty - but this year has also driven home a number of important factors.
Each of us, from freelance writers straight through to the Editor In Chief, are enormously grateful to have a platform with which to express ourselves, and also to support, showcase, and amplify the voices that stand out from the crowd.
It s been a hugely challenging year both for musicians and for the publications that write about them - our continuing role isn t something we take for granted.
