The Lithuanian faction of the ultra-Orthodox United Torah Judaism (UTJ) party is considering whether to abstain from voting against a government led by Yamina head Naftali Bennett and Yesh Atid chair Yair Lapid, Ynet has learned on Thursday, thus enabling the two to form a government and avoid a fifth election round in just two years.
In return, the Haredi faction will demand that the right-wing flank of such a government would commit itself to maintain the status quo in state-religion affairs and prevent stripping off budgets for the sector s educational institutions and welfare.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu backed on Monday the idea of a direct election for the role of prime minister, saying that there s a solution for Israel s ongoing political deadlock, with two weeks left before his mandate to form a government expires and with hardly any progress reported in coalition talks. Instead of forming absurd governments. there ll be direct election for prime minister, Netanyahu said ahead of a Likud faction meeting at the Knesset. The public will elect the prime minister directly in a snap vote, without dissolving the Knesset.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is not seen as a bellicose type. He is cautious in the use of force. When conflict is forced on him, he will seek to end it quickly, without expanding or deepening it. This is what he has done for his 12 continuous years in power. Today, at the most critical point in time for his political and personal future, there are suspicious signs that undercut this perception and that should disturb every Israeli. Senior defense officials, both past and present, are well aware of what is happening and are losing sleep over it.
