University of Maine women s basketball head coach Amy Vachon joined The Drive on Monday to promote the upcoming Pass It Forward Women s Coaching Clinic which will take place on Sunday, September 19 at the Augusta Civic Center. Along with Vachon, Maine Basketball Hall of Famer Joanne McCallie and Dr. Nicole LaVoi, the director of the Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport at the University of Minnesota, will be keynote speakers. Expanded NCAA eligibility limiting opportunities for Maine high school athletes

Last October, the NCAA granted an extra year of eligibility to athletes due to the pandemic, but that is having a negative effect on high school seniors looking to play sports at the next level.Maranacook High School senior Cash McClure is one of the best boys basketball players in the state of Maine. Typically, colleges would be knocking down his door with scholarship offers.“Some of those college players can stay an extra year now. They have an extra year of eligibility, so these colleges aren’t recruiting as much, especially central Maine kids,” McClure said.McClure has decided to play a post-graduate season to see if that opens more collegiate options.Brunswick High School soccer standout Lane Foushee said he is not ruling out any options.“It can be frustrating, definitely, seeing other people get scholarships or be recruited, and I’m still stuck in the same boat, Foushee said.The logjam of athletes has left college coaches wondering how it will shake out.“These
