Dublin, CA – Two suspects were arrested on a murder warrant Tuesday (April 27) during the investigation of Bay Area native Lil Yase who was shot and killed in November 2020. USD Faculty Ensembles perform for first time together

The USD Faculty Ensembles in Concert will feature two faculty ensembles: the Faculty Brass Quintet and the South Dakota Chamber Winds. This will be the first concert the two wind groups perform together. Both groups will perform separately and at the end they will perform a piece together.   Assistant professor of horn Dr. Amy Laursen has been playing the horn for 24 years. She said the main function of both groups is to be a recruiting tool when they perform at schools, but they typically do not give a whole recital. Not only do the ensembles act as recruiting tools, they also provide a way for USD students to learn more about what their teachers do outside of the classroom.

USD Symphony Orchestra performs winter concert

The USD Symphony Orchestra presented their winter concert Friday. Due to COVID-19, the performance had limited attendance by invitation only and was live-streamed for others to virtually attend. Director of Orchestras Luis Viquez said that they have followed all USD mandates, but preparing the orchestra for this concert had its challenges due to COVID-19. “We have had students in quarantine, we have had people missing several rehearsals. But we always find creative ways to accommodate to all those difficulties,” Viquez said in an email interview with The Volante. To practice while ensuring social distancing guidelines were being followed, Viquez said the orchestra was able to spread out in the house seats but that this also had its own difficulties.
