One father spent half his life in the Army. Another loved marathons, and another loved fishing and hunting.
Each were soldiers and parents, and 13 of their children will honor their memory with a Memorial Day 5K run Monday in Fayetteville.
Since April 10, the children have spent their Saturdays training with soldiers who have served as their mentors.
They’ve met at Clark Park in Fayetteville playing games
and sharing what’s on their minds, gathering in a circle to proclaim who they are running in memory of, and being encouraged to run.
The national organization was founded by Lisa Hallett after her husband, Capt. John Hallett,30, was killed when returning from a mission in Afghanistan in August 2009.

Jenny Kate Smith, 79, of Chattanooga, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, March 11, 2021
She was preceded in death by her parents; Millard B. Chase and Eloise Fitzgerald; and also her brother, Burke Chase.
Jenny is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Jerry D. Smith; her children, Denise (Greg) Evans and Victor (Sue) Smith; and her grandchildren, Aubrey Smith, Garrett Smith, Riley Evans, and Shelby Evans.
Jenny was born in Cleveland, Tn., and graduated from Bradley Central High School. She studied and graduated from Erlanger Nursing School as a registered nurse. Jenny worked at Erlanger and was a much beloved nurse at Tyner Junior High School. She became the Assistant Nursing Director at Life Care of Collegedale and Hamilton County Nursing Home. Jenny worked, until her retirement, as Director of Nursing at NHC Rossville.
