It has been over two years since the release of the last Marvel movie, after “Spider-Man: Far From Home” debuted in theatres in 2019. The follow-up to “Avengers: Endgame,” showed the world in the after the reverse of “the blip” and the death of Tony Stark, and the potential of Peter Parker stepping into the metal shoes of Iron Man. The end of “Phase 3” of Marvel’s Universe brought us tears and a fitting conclusion to the Infinity Saga, which took over a decade and nearly two dozen movies to tell.
Among the biggest shockers of “Endgame” was the loss of Scarlett Johansson’s character, Natasha Romanoff. Romanoff sacrificed herself in exchange for the Soul Stone on Vormir, allowing for Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton to return home to his family who had all been snapped away by Thanos. With the coming solo film for Romanoff, a lot of questions remained as to how this film would weave into the MCU un
Black Widow.
Black Widow is now finally out in theaters and on Disney+ (for those who feel like spending an additional $29.99), and that likely closes the book on Natasha Romanoff, the character played now in eight Marvel Cinematic Universe movies across an 11-year span by Scarlett Johansson.
It was clear after
Avengers: Endgame that Natasha (and Johansson) had limited time remaining in their MCU journeys after the character, you know, died. But
Black Widow finally gives Natasha the solo hero journey that she s long deserved, while setting up her sister, Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) up for her own future across numerous MCU projects.
The following post contains
SPOILERS for Black Widow. In fact, it’s almost all spoilers. The whole thing. This sentence you’re reading right now is a spoiler. Sorry.
You know how
already died, retrieving the Soul Stone in
Avengers: Endgame. Almost all of
Black Widow takes place before those events, revealing a previously untold adventure that Natasha went on between the events of
Captain America: Civil War and
Avengers: Infinity War. The only scene set
after Natasha’s death comes during the closing credits. For the purposes of Marvel fans wondering where things are headed in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, that’s the most important part, because it’s the only one that teases future movies and shows.
