BELOIT, Wis. — The Beloit Police Department is partnering with Community Action to host cookouts throughout the month of June in hopes of building a safer community and unifying neighborhoods. There will be two cookouts during June at neighborhood parks. Hot dogs, chips and water will be provided. Community Action executive director Marc Perry and officers like Chief Andre Sayles.
More than 50, including families of multiple gun violence victims, were in attendance.
“We want to urge our community to work together, so we can get these murders solved and get justice for them,” said organizer Lexi Payton, whose cousin Chelsey was shot and killed in Beloit in October of 2020. “When she passed, it just felt like this was the only right thing to do – work together.”
Payton, along with co-organizer Vonnie Marshall, invited several community leaders including police Chief Andre Sayles and NAACP President Tia Johnson to speak. Payton says their ultimate goal is to reduce the amount of gun violence in the community, while also getting answers in Chelsey Payton’s death.

JANESVILLE
The sacrifices of the men and women who swear oaths to protect Rock County were recognized Tuesday during a ceremony in Janesville that honored all county law enforcement, marking the first time the event had been held since 2019 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The ceremony was held at the Roth Pavilion in Janesville s Lower Courthouse Park during National Police Week. The event paid special tribute to law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. The event featured the Rock County combined honor guard and musical selections by Kellie Pearson and Elaine McDonald.

Beloit Police Chief Andre Sayles is looking for a few good officers. Beloit’s newly sworn-in chief isn’t shying away from his pledge to maintain open communication, transparency, and accountability in the department. Among other measures, Chief Andre Sayles is using Facebook to appeal to a specific type of new recruit. The chief says he’s looking for team players who have a guardian mentality, appreciate diversity, and are willing to hold each other responsible for the integrity needed as police officers.
