Live election coverage: Denise Jackson wins 1st District Council seat Journal Star staff As results came in, several races began to tighten. The race for the 2nd District seat on the Peoria City Council narrowed as challenger Peter Kobak winnowed incumbent Chuck Grayeb’s lead to just 115 votes with four precincts left to be counted. Peoria s treasurer race was split nearly 50-50, with Stephen Morris holding a minimal lead over Brooke Petty Sommerville.  The mayor s race has gradually tightened throughout the night, with Rita Ali holding a slim 51-49 lead over Jim Montelongo with just 19 of the city s 95 precincts still remaining. Votes are mostly out in the 3rd and 5th districts, with a few additional precincts remaining to be counted in the city s 2nd and 4th districts.

Denise Jackson Will Represent Peoria s 1st Council District

Originally published on April 6, 2021 11:35 pm Denise Jackson defeated 1st District incumbent Denise Moore by a decisive 70% to 30% margin on Tuesday night. Jackson, a former TV news reporter, will represent the district encompassing downtown Peoria, the South Side, and the North Valley neighborhoods. Moore congratulated Jackson on her victory on Tuesday evening. Second District Councilman Chuck Grayeb, the dean of the Peoria City Council, will remain in his seat after defeating Peter Kobak in a head-to-head contest. Grayeb won by a 54% to 46% margin. Incumbents will also remain in the 3rd and 5th Districts. Tim Riggenbach defeated former councilmember Gale Thetford 60% to 40% in the 3rd District, while 5th District Councilman Denis Cyr beat insurance agent Ryan Hite by a 63 to 36% margin.

Incumbents Tim Riggenbach, Chuck Grayeb and Denis Cyr all retained their spots around the Horseshoe. Challenger Denise Jackson beat incumbent Denise Moore in the city s 1st District and Andre Allen in the 4th District had no opponent, filling a seat vacated by Jim Montelongo who opted to run for mayor instead. 1st District Jackson, a former TV newscaster, pulled in nearly 70% of the vote to beat Moore, who was running for her third term on the council. Jackson got 861 votes to Moore s 371.  2nd District In the city s 2nd District, Grayeb, who is the longest serving member on the council, beat challenger Peter Kobak. Grayeb had 1,408 votes to Kobak s 1,212.
