The rise and rise of Melbourne s new bakeries

Melbourne was riding high on a wave of quality sourdough and artisan pastries before the pandemic, with next-generation bakeries such as Caulfield North s Baker Bleu, Brunswick East s Wildlife and All Are Welcome in Northcote and Thornbury joining familiar stalwarts like Baker D. Chirico over the past five years. But we re still hungry for more bread and cake.
More than a dozen bakeries have opened or expanded since early 2020, defying the economic odds of successive lockdowns. There s Mabels in Toorak, Ripponlea s Zelda – one of the few Melbourne bakeries offering kosher sourdough – and Bakemono, a hole-in-the-wall CBD spot that opened a month before COVID hit and has thrived.

The Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Awards will return in 2021 with presenting sponsor, award-winning winery Levantine Hill, and supporting partners, Visit Victoria, Longines, Waterford, Sub Zero & Wolf and PorkStar.
After a hiatus last year the awards – including the prestigious Restaurant of the Year – will be revealed at a glittering awards dinner on October 27 at Gimlet at Cavendish House in Melbourne.
With support from Visit Victoria, the event will be held in Melbourne for the first time in 10 years to celebrate the city’s resilient and world-class hospitality industry. Often regarded as Australia’s culinary capital, the city is emerging from a challenging year and is once again, ready to serve.

A NEW restaurant has opened at a south Belfast hotel as part of a £250,000 investment.
‘Gallery’ at The Malone has been unveiled as the first stage in a three-part refurbishment of the boutique hotel, formerly known as The Malone Lodge.
The new ‘Greyhound’ bar and room upgrades have also been completed at the family-owned hotel, now in its 30th year.
The four-star Eglantine Avenue venue has appointed Andrew McConnell, formerly of The Culloden Hotel, as its new executive chef, with general manager Suzi McIlhatton leading a new management team.
