The top three selections in the 2016 National Draft â Andrew McGrath, Tim Taranto and Hugh McCluggage â have all developed into fine young midfielders.
Essendon selected McGrath with the first pick overall with Taranto (pick 2) and McCluggage (3) landing at GWS and Brisbane respectively.
McGrath was named the 2017 Rising Star, Taranto won his first best and fairest in a star-studded Giants side in 2019, while Lions gun McCluggage has twice made the All-Australian squad of 40.
Former Geelong midfielder Liam Pickering would select McCluggage with pick No.1 if he was redoing the 2016 draft.

Following Western s loss in Round 7, an interesting situation has made this Saturday slate extra important at both ends of the ladder. At the top, Melbourne has the chance to widen the gap over the Western Bulldogs in second place, while a matchup of the league s worst teams in Collingwood and North Melbourne could have big implications in who finishes last this season. In that first matchup, Lance Franklin and Dane Rampe will return to bolster the Swans while the Dees still haven t had to make many changes to their best lineup. On the weekend, Sam Petrevski-Seton finally returned to some semblance of a midfield role for the Blues and played his best game of the year.
This was only possible because he was substituted on for a midfielder, Paddy Dow.
Petrevski-Seton had been dropped following 18 months of indifferent form in the back half and one week back on the wing.
The former top-10 draft pick looked engaged, hit the contest hard and had 14 disposals playing essentially half of the game.
He only attended three centre bounces, but it was still a prominent midfield role that reinvigorated him.
Carlton outlast historical rival Essendon in old-fashioned shootout

Footy fans were treated to an old-fashioned shootout as Carlton bested Essendon 123-107 in a high-scoring affair on Sunday at the MCG.
The historical rivals traded blows all afternoon with the ball moving freely from end to end throughout.
Essendon started the game well before Carlton brought them back at half-time with the margin remaining tight until the Blues began to pull away late.
Ultimately, Carlton had a little too much class for the Bombers with Sam Walsh continuing his remarkable season thus far with 33 disposals and a goal.
