On The Last Word yesterday, Andrew McGinley, whose wife Deirdre Morley was found not guilty by reason of insanity last week of murdering their three children Conor, Darragh and Carla, made several criticisms of Deirdre’s treatment by the mental health services in Ireland.

While the 44-year-old nurse admitted suffocating the children, the court heard psychiatric evidence of a rapid decline in her mental health that led to a delusional belief that she was a bad mother who needed to take their lives to put them out of their misery.
The children’s father, Andrew McGinley, has
said the verdict was probably the right one and noted that everyone who knows Ms Morley understands how much she loved her children and how devoted she was to them.

The Central Criminal Court heard that she was suffering from a severe mental disorder, which included depression and bipolar affective disorder, when she suffocated the three youngsters in their Newcastle, Co Dublin home while Andrew was in Cork for a night on a work trip in January 2020.
Medical experts told the three-day trial that Deirdre took their lives during a psychotic episode because she “had lost all hope” and thought she had “damaged them irreparably” because of her mental illness.
