Former Santa Fe cop alleges retaliation in lawsuit

Copyright © 2020 Albuquerque Journal SANTA FE – A former Santa Fe Police Department lieutenant contends in a lawsuit that she was forced into retirement after repeatedly being retaliated against by the city of Santa Fe because she reported time card fraud and evidence room violations to supervisors. Michele Williams, who retired late last year, filed a lawsuit Dec. 11 against the city of Santa Fe and Mayor Alan Webber. She accuses the city of violating the Whistleblower Protection Act by demoting her from a field lieutenant to an administrative position and a lower salary. According to the lawsuit, Williams first raised concerns in December 2018 that her supervisor, Deputy Police Chief Robert Vasquez, was claiming time worked when he was out of the office. His time cards were signed-off by Chief Andrew Padilla, so Williams reported the discrepancies to then-City Manager Erik Litzenberg.

Santa Fe law enforcement report few COVID-19 cases

Their work has placed them at the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic in high-contact situations: responding to violent incidents, aiding people in crisis, monitoring protests, interacting with members of the homeless community and enforcing face mask rules. Still, officials say just 10 officers with the Santa Fe Police Department, out of 141 on the force, and one employee at the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office, out of 107 total workers, have tested positive for the illness. Five of the city police cases are active, data shows. The local law enforcement agencies have managed to avoid an outbreak like the one that struck the Albuquerque Police Department last month, infecting more than 50 workers, according to news reports. That department has had over 100 infections throughout the pandemic.
