Darren Chester was yesterday a casualty of a federal cabinet reshuffle sparked by Barnaby Joyce’s return as Nationals leader.
Mr Chester, the Federal Member for Gippsland, was replaced as the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel by Andrew Gee.
“I have been incredibly humbled by the support expressed both publicly and privately in recent days by veterans’ organisations and individuals,” Mr Chester said.
“There was still plenty of work to be done, but that task will fall to the incoming minister.
“I urge the ex-service community to provide the same constructive feedback, practical advice and input that my team has benefited from.
Barnaby Joyce announces Cabinet reshuffle27/06/2021|2min
Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce has announced a ministerial reshuffle after taking leadership of the Nationals from Michael McCormack.
The changes will see Bridget McKenzie take on regional education, regional communications, regionalisation along with drought and emergency management.
David Littleproud will serve as the minister for agriculture and Northern Australia.
Andrew Gee will move to the frontbench as veterans affairs and defence personnel minister.
David Gillespie will become minister for regional health and deputy leader of the House.
“These are the recommendations to the governor-general and the governor-general will then make his views known and his decision will be made,” MrJoyce said.

Bruised Nationals MPs are warning it will take some time to mend the bitter divisions within the party following Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce’s ousting of Michael McCormack and his allies from the ministry.
Mr Joyce’s decision to dump both Victorian MP Darren Chester and Queenslander Keith Pitt from cabinet and elevate two of his backers, Bridget McKenzie and Andrew Gee, mirrored a similar reshuffle in December 2017, which many Nationals believe started three years of animosity within the party room.
Bridget McKenzie and Andrew Gee (top ) were winners from the reshuffle, while Darren Chester and Keith Pitt were dumped from cabinet.
