In the first quarterfinal played at the Cairo Sports Indoor Sports Complex, Denmark defeated Egypt 39-38 after a penalty shootout. Egypt was in the ascendancy for the early part of the match and it was only in the 18
th minute when Danes took the lead. The halftime score was 16-13 in Favor of Denmark. The Danes maintained a lead in most of the second half but Egypt was resilient and the second half ended 28-28.
There was more drama in extra time. Danes looked to win at the end of the first extra time but right at the end Denmark’s Mikkel Hansen was sent off for time wasting and A final 7m throw converted by Sanad gave the Egyptians the draw that took them to the second two periods.

Doha: Asian champions Qatar have vowed to put up a strong fight against European giants Sweden when the two sides clash in the quarter-final of the 27th IHF Men’s Handball World Championship in Cairo today.
Al Annabi reached the last-8 stage of the global event after finishing second in the Group II, topped by defending champions Denmark.
Today’s quarter-final that will start at 10:30pm (Qatar time) is expected to be another thriller for Qatar, who defeated Argentina 26-24 in their last group match to book last-8 spot.
Qatar’s pivot Youssef Benali yesterday termed Sweden game tough but promised all-out effort from his side.
