It did not take long after President Biden was officially inaugurated for the Spanish version of the White House website to be promptly reactivated. The decision was as predictable as it was meaningful. It reversed one of the very first actions by the previous administration disabling the Spanish version of the website, which had existed continually since the George W. Bush presidency. (Interestingly, Trump’s White House communications team did keep the @LaCasaBlanca handle on Twitter to post sporadic announcements in Spanish.)
It is early to tell what the language policies of the Biden administration will be, but we have already seen other welcome changes, too. Most notably, after firefighter Andrea Hall delivered the Pledge of Allegiance at the Inauguration simultaneously in English and ASL, White House press briefings are now accompanied by livestreamed ASL interpreting (which has already seen its share of controversy over the far-right links of the first interpreter).

Andrea Hall, left, moved in with Eileen Bell in mid-July as part of a ‘homeshare’ scheme that has enabled the 98-year-old to remain in her home of 22 years, and maintain her social connections. The ad was listed by Eastern Bay Villages - a group that offers community support to older Kiwis in the Bay of Plenty. Coordinator Ruth Gerzon said home-sharing had multiple benefits. “An older person living alone has a younger person to live rent-free with them for ten hours support a week,” she said. “This enables older people to avoid a rest home, and younger people to save for their own home.

Kraft Foods announced via their Instagram that there is a new flavor of mac and cheese arriving just in time for Valentine’s Day! Is it chocolate? Strawberries? Cherry? No! It’s … candy! We don’t know what kind of candy or why they would do this, but it’s real and it’s happening. And all I can think about is how THIS is proof that we’re in the darkest timeline.
You can’t just take something so classic and change it up for sugar’s sake. What’s next? Oreo mac and cheese? Gummy bear mac and cheese? Red velvet mac and cheese? All of them are an instant nope. Mac and cheese is delicious cheesy goodness and no candy should be involved in its making. Thank god it’s only available online and by chance.
Speaking of hiring, our manager has been trying to hire servers and is having a terrible time. I think a lot of people who previously worked as servers have decided that working in the restaurant industry right now is too risky, so they’re doing other things until COVID is over. I can’t blame them at all, you’ve got do to what you’ve got to do to make money and stay safe. We have one server whose boyfriend is paying a lot of her bills; my manager says she’s calling in “sick” more now. We run extremely thin on help, so it causes a problem. We had another server who we caught stealing from us (she voided 8 cash tickets on one night because she had a party that didn’t tip her very well, which means she kept the cash), so of course we had to fire her. It’s hard to find good people, that’s for sure.
