County nurses hit the streets, work at pop-up clinic to vaccinate homeless from COVID-19

SAN DIEGO  Anthony Romero said he already has contracted COVID-19 and believes he may be immune, but he wasn’t about to pass up a vaccination for the disease. “Better safe than sorry,” he said about why he decided to get a coronavirus vaccine shot at a pop-up health clinic in Balboa Park on Thursday morning. Romero said he has been homeless since he and his husband had to move out of their Hillcrest apartment after a dispute with their landlord about two years ago. The couple since has broken up, and he’s been living in the park these past several months.

How the Pacific Northwest is playing a key role in the burgeoning world of carbon capture tech

How the Pacific Northwest is playing a key role in the burgeoning world of carbon capture tech April 20, 2021 at 9:53 am Underwritten by This special series focuses on important community issues, innovative solutions to societal challenges, and people and non-profit groups making an impact through technology. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory chemical engineer Dushyant Barpagaare is using a laboratory continuous flow system to study solvents that can capture carbon from the air. (Andrea Starr / PNNL Photo) Carbon capture is a hot new area for innovation and investment, and Pacific Northwest researchers, companies, policymakers and individuals are stepping up to play leading roles.

Mapping Performance Variations to See How Lithium-Metal Batteries Fail

share: Mapping Performance Variations to See How Lithium-Metal Batteries Fail Using high-energy x-rays, scientists probed different points across a high-energy-density lithium-metal battery of interest for long-range electric vehicles and used the data to identify the main failure mechanism April 19, 2021 Brookhaven Lab chemist and Stony Brook University (SBU) professor Peter Khalifah (middle) with SBU graduate students Zhuo Li (left) and Gerard Mattei (right) holding a pouch cell battery attached to a frame used for synchrotron x-ray studies. Note: This photo was taken prior to current COVID-19 social distancing guidelines. UPTON, NY Scientists have identified the primary cause of failure in a state-of-the-art lithium-metal battery, of interest for long-range electric vehicles. Using high-energy x-rays, they followed the cycling-induced changes at thousands of different points across the battery and mapped the variations in performance. At each point, they used the x-ray data
