MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Students across the state are beginning to return to the classroom either in-person or virtually for the spring semester.
Some teachers say they believe teachers and students should both be online.
On Saturday, a small group of teachers voiced that message near the state capitol.
They say that school systems should wait before asking teachers and students to return back to the classroom until the COVID-19 numbers go down or the opportunity to be vaccinated becomes available.
After five weeks of virtual learning and the holiday break, about a third of MPS students will return to in-person learning on Monday. Superintendent Dr. Ann Roy Moore says the board believes the students had ample amount of time to return to school safely. Moore says the board decided to leave the decision open to parents and families on whether.

MPS set to give in-class learning option starting Jan. 11 By WSFA Staff | January 8, 2021 at 8:56 PM CST - Updated January 11 at 7:27 AM
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Montgomery Public School students had the option to return back to the classroom Monday after a week of virtual learning.
According to MPS Superintendent Dr. Ann Roy Moore, about a third of the system’s 20,000 students indicated they wanted to return to face-to-face learning.
She said the coming weeks will be a challenge, but one that the school system is ready to take on.
“We’re cleaning and sanitizing our classrooms and our buses. We’re making sure we have masks, and we shut down all the water fountains. Our custodians go in and clean every day. They have a special kind of sprayer and disinfectant that they use,” Moore said last week.
