Burnham & Highbridge Town Council votes to go paperless to save money

Burnham & Highbridge Town Council votes to go paperless to save money Burnham and Highbridge Town Council is set to go paperless after councillors last night (Monday) voted in favour of moving into the digital age. During a virtual meeting of the full council, they voted to buy new tablet PCs for each councillor and use a ‘paperless meetings management system’ to replace paper copies of agendas, minutes and reports. Town Council Clerk Sam Winter told the meeting: “Electronic systems save many staff hours and many thousands of pounds and it must be the way forward. If we issue devices, everything is readily accessible, it puts everyone on a level playing field. You would all receive the same information at the same time on Town Council managed devices.”

Police praise Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge for low level of Covid breaches

Police have this week thanked local people after saying the number of breaches to Covid restrictions in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge is low compared to some other areas. During an update to town councillors at a virtual meeting this week, Neighbourhood Sergeant Joe Piscina of Avon and Somerset Police said local officers are “very busy” across the area during the ongoing pandemic. He said: “Since we’ve gone into this third lockdown, here in Somerset West we are dealing with an extra 2,500 calls, mainly for Covid related breaches, and so demand is really, really high.” “That said, though, I’m really pleased to say Burnham and Highbridge as a community is really pulling together and we’re not noticing many breaches here.”

Seafront residents say council is ignoring their calls to relocate proposed play area

Seafront residents in Burnham-On-Sea say they are being “ignored” by the Town Council over their calls for a proposed play area to be re-located further along the Esplanade – and they are now considering legal action. As reported here, residents of Quantock Court say that while they support the idea of a new seafront play area, the tarmac area on the South Esplanade earmarked for the new facilities is “unsuitable” as it is ‘regularly used’ for various outdoor activities by families, runners, dog walkers, keep fit enthusiasts and cyclists, and is also overlooked by their flats. They voiced their concerns at the latest virtual meeting of the council’s Town Improvements Committee, and handed in a petition to the Town Council calling for the proposed play area to be relocated further along the seafront to the lawns opposite Burnham Holiday Village.

Proposals for £300,000 Burnham-On-Sea heritage centre considered by councillors

Proposals for £300,000 Burnham-On-Sea heritage centre considered by councillors Proposals to create a new £300,000 heritage centre in Burnham-On-Sea have been discussed by town councillors this week. At a virtual meeting of the Council’s Town Improvements committee on Monday night (January 11th), members considered proposals by Burnham-On-Sea Heritage Group to purchase a town centre property to create the planned heritage centre. The new facilities would showcase the area’s rich history with displays of photographs and old exhibits, alongside an education centre, as first featured here last March. Councillors Mike Facey and Peter Clayton told the meeting they had recently met with Mrs Ann Popham from the heritage group – prior to the lockdown starting – to hear about the proposals for the former Diamond Garage site in the town centre.
