Talifarro began his firefighting career more than three decades ago and worked for the city of Flint before becoming East Lansing s fire chief in 2001. In 2012, Talifarro began serving as the fire chief for both Lansing and East Lansing under an agreement between the two cities.
At the time, some officials hoped sharing a chief could pave the way for a joint fire district in which the two fire departments merged to cut down on costs. The merger never materialized, however.
Talifarro resigned from his Lansing role in 2018 while continuing to work as East Lansing s chief. In an open letter, Talifarro said Lansing Mayor Andy Schor hadn t done enough to promote racial diversity in the fire department and had created an unhealthy culture.
In a statement, Green said he’s grateful for the chance to serve Lansing citizens.
“I am proud of the reforms the Lansing Police Department completed, and it is time for me to pass the baton to another police chief that will continue this important work of reimagining public safety,” he said.
Lansing s Police Department has seen its share of controversy under Green s tenure, including the death of Anthony Hulon, who died of asphyxiation after being restrained by police in the Lansing jail. Michigan s Attorney General declined to file charges against the officers involved in Hulon s death, but a civil lawsuit is ongoing. Lansing s Police Department violated its critical incident policies in the aftermath of Hulon s death, the Lansing State Journal found.
