Hysteria aside, recent Presidential elections, especially this past one, have raised enough legitimate questions and exposed enough fissures in our basic democratic exercise to merit serious analysis and, if warranted, enough modifications to make the mechanics of the 2024 election less contentious. Ensuring the integrity of mail-in ballots and the reliability of voting machines top the list, followed by a fine-tuning of procedures and timelines for challenging results and certifying outcomes, and finally, revisiting our reliance on the arcane Electoral College to determine a winner, regardless of who won the popular vote.

One does not have to be a budget wonk, a title Andy Shaw aptly disclaims ( 8 steps Illinois budgeteers should take now, Dec. 1), to know one of his suggestions meant to help the state through its immediate budget crisis is a perfect example of the decades of wrongheaded thinking underlying most of what s wrong with Illinois disastrous finances. Shaw suggests Springfield should reduce payments into the state pension and retirement funds for one year, so those dollars perhaps several billion can be spent on essential programs that people rely on day to day. The pension pot would have to be repaid in full in a year or two.
