NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – New York state has decided that in most cases students can now be 3 feet apart in schools instead of 6 feet.
The guidance was first recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in March.
The new rule takes barriers away, but masks will still be mandated at all times for everyone.
All students in counties with low, moderate and substantial risk of transmission are allowed to be 3 feet apart in the classroom.
In counties with high risk of transmission, elementary students can still have 3 feet of separation, but middle and high schoolers will have to go back to 6 feet if they are not able to be in pods, which are groups of students who are with each other throughout the day.
State assessments will be administered starting this month, but the New York State United Teachers union has started a campaign to spread the word that parents can opt not to have their children take the assessments.
âThis year has tested our kids enough. Parents: Know your rights to opt your kids out of the state tests,â the union campaign says.
Only Section 1 of the Math and English Language Arts assessments for grades three through eight will be administered rather than two sessions, and only the written test component of the grades four and eight Science assessments will be administered.
The grades three through eight English Language Arts assessment is scheduled to be administered from April 19 to 29, and the grades three through eight Mathematics assessment is scheduled to be administered from May 3 to 14. The grade four and eight Science assessment is scheduled to be administered from June 7 to 11.
