NSW Government Slammed for Proposed Darling Harbour High-rise Development

Jarrod Reedie The NSW Government and City of Sydney Council are at loggerheads over a 42-storey residential tower above the Harbourside Shopping Centre, that the council believes will privatise much of Darling Harbour’s prime waterfront. In what can only be classed as a questionable move by the Berejiklian Government given the state of the city’s night time economy, the Department of Planning is pushing on with the development plans, in line with Mirvac’s $708 million plan to significantly remodel the shopping centre. Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore and the council believe the tower will restrict Darling Harbour’s potential as a 24-hour tourism precinct, that takes advantage of its positioning and entertainment and cultural facilities.

Proposed by the City of Sydney Council, the Greening Sydney 2030 plan has an estimated budget of 377 million Australian dollars (about 291.5 million U.S. dollars), to be put towards planting 700 new trees in urban areas per year, and increasing green roofs, walls and streetscape gardening. The plan is partly in response to an increase in the prevalence of heat waves world wide, with multiple studies showing that areas primarily made up of concrete and hard surfaces experience much higher temperatures than those with greenery.

For Relief From Scorching Summers, Sydney Will Plant More Trees

For Relief From Scorching Summers, Sydney Will Plant More Trees Bloomberg 4 days ago (Bloomberg) Sydney hopes that literally becoming greener will offer sweaty citizens some respite from a warming climate. The City of Sydney, which includes the main business district in Australia’s largest metropolis, plans to have trees shade 27% of its area by 2050, up from 18% in 2019. With the region likely to see as many as five more days a year of temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius (95 Fahrenheit) in the next two decades, the plans echo international moves to help mitigate the effects of climate change. “Dangerous heat waves are arriving earlier, are hotter and last longer,” Sydney’s Lord Mayor Clover Moore said in a statement. “Our city must adapt to the changing climate and increase its resilience to the likely impacts.”

Kings Cross pub O Malleys Hotel for sale days before lockout laws end on March 8 in Sydney

Only days before lockout laws are removed from Sydney s once-iconic party strip Kings Cross, one of its most popular pubs is put up for sale. O Malleys Hotel on William Street in Wooloomoloo has gone into receivership and was listed only four days before lockout laws are to be scrapped on March 8. The popular Irish bar has been shut since December 2020, having struggled under the laws that stopped it from serving alcohol after 1.30am for the past seven years.  The shock closure comes after the NSW Government decided to revive the area s night-time economy by letting venues trade until 3.30am.  O Malleys Hotel on William Street in Wooloomoloo (pictured) has gone into receivership and was listed only four days before lockout laws are to be scrapped on March 8
