IN the course of my working day in No 11 Downing Street many documents arrive on my desk for study and signature. The majority of them are about the nation’s monetary and fiscal policy, the fine details of the UK’s finances and for the last year the Government’s response to Covid-19. But recently, two warrants came to me for signature which were certainly out of the ordinary. When I started this job a year ago I wasn’t aware that one of my responsibilities was overseeing an historic process which enables an MP to resign his seat. One might think this should be straightforward and in practical terms it is but as Chancellor I have a small but important role to play in a procedure which has its roots back in the 17th Century and the reign of James I.

Operation Midland
Public figures caught up in a disastrous investigation into false claims of a VIP paedophile ring have still not received justice, one of their widows has said.
Lady Diana Brittan was given compensation and an official apology from the Metropolitan Police after her homes in London and Yorkshire were raided in 2015 as part of Operation Midland amid allegations against her late husband.
The doomed 16-month investigation, sparked by false accounts given by fantasist Carl Beech, saw raids on the homes of former home secretary Lord Brittan, as well as D-Day veteran Lord Bramall and ex-Tory MP Harvey Proctor.
Victims of the VIP paedophile scandal accused Priti Patel of shirking her responsibility as Home Secretary last night after she dismissed growing calls for a fresh inquiry.
Miss Patel was under pressure to act after six of her predecessors said confidence in the police had been seriously damaged by Scotland Yard s investigation into false claims by fantasist Nick of a Westminster paedophile ring.
They called for a new investigation into the Metropolitan Police s disastrous Operation Midland probe, which led to raids on the homes of ex-MP Harvey Proctor, former home secretary Leon Brittan and former head of the Armed Forces Lord Bramall.
