Handsome from a distance, but in its present and closed-up state, Anderson House has languished too long in miserable disuse.
EDITORIAL: How galling if after all the complaints about civic idleness, it’s now civic busyness that may further prolong the time Invercargill’s Anderson House languishes in miserable disuse. For seven decades the Georgian-styled house had been enjoyed by the public not only for its art collection, but also for the environmental pleasures of the building and grounds Then came the day, seven years ago, that it was closed as an earthquake risk. Since then, well, the cause of its reopening has been pursued at something less purposeful than a plod, as other civic imperatives received rather more adrenalised attention.

The Invercargill City Council is planning to spend $4.5m on deferred maintenance and strengthening work at Rugby Park. “The ongoing issues that are frustrating us all are finally being clarified and a pathway to reinstatement in the Park is being determined.” “It is my belief, to run a regional sports organisation such as ours, from a temporary office situation, is completely unsatisfactory, and we need to be back at our traditional home as soon as practical.” On top of the closure of the Rugby Southland office at Rugby Park, 1567 seats in the 3400-seat Rugby Park grandstand are also off-limits at the moment because they have been declared an earthquake risk.
