On February 24, 1981, Prince Charles officially announced his engagement to 19-year-old Lady Diana Spencer. The image of the couple giving their first joint interview, Diana shyly peeking out from beneath her fringe, has been seared onto our collective consciousness. The royal blue sparkler on her finger became one of the most influential engagement rings of modern times, inspiring brides-to-be and spawning countless imitations some 40 years later.
