March 1 testing returns 108 new positive staff and incarcerated cases at Northern State Correctional Facility
Vermont Business Magazine Vermont Department of Corrections (Vermont DOC) reported Tuesday night that 100 new cases of COVID-19 among incarcerated individuals and eight new staff cases in the outbreak at Northern State Correctional Facility (NSCF) in Newport. The cases were detected in testing conducted March 1.
The outbreak began after one staff member and 21 incarcerated individuals tested positive for the virus. The 22 total cases were detected in testing conducted February 23, 2021. There are currently 127 positive incarcerated cases and ten positive staff cases at the facility.
Contact tracing is underway, and Vermont DOC and Vermont Health Department’s Rapid Response Team are outlining follow-up actions and testing. The entire facility will be tested again on March 4, and has been in full lockdown since receipt of the first positive results on February 25

Vaccine distrust
A disproportionate number of them are from minority communities.
Black Americans are 1.1 times more likely to contract COVID-19, nearly 3 times as likely to be hospitalized, and nearly twice as likely to die from the disease, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Hispanic and Latino individuals as well as American Indians and Alaskan natives also are disproportionately likely to be infected, hospitalized and killed by the coronavirus.

According to a news release, Walz will announce his COVID-19 recovery budget in a news conference at noon. It will be streamed on the governor s YouTube page here.
The State of Minnesota is projected to face a $1.27 billion deficit for the two-year budget that begins July 1, but state leaders are confident the picture will improve when another budget forecast is released in February. Additional federal aid could also improve the state s outlook.

Slaton City Commissioner Weldon ‘Squeaky’ Self remembered for service
Slaton City Commissioner Weldon Squeaky Self died Tuesday following a long career serving his community, the city announced in a news release on Wednesday.
Self had served as City Commissioner of Ward 1 since May 2013, according to a news release from the city. He was also active in the Lions Club, his church and all aspects of the City of Slaton, the news release continued. Squeaky will be missed dearly because he has touched the lives of so many people here in Slaton, reads the statement signed by Slaton Mayor Lynn Nowlin.
