ORHS grad s research might boost food production

Kris Niyogi, an Oak Ridge High School graduate, led more than 10 years of research at Berkeley, Calif., that resulted in explanations of how green plants protect themselves from excess sunlight. The work earned him election in 2016 to the National Academy of Sciences.
This prestigious honor was previously awarded in 1998 to his mother, Audrey Stevens, a biochemist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. She discovered the enzyme that copies DNA into the RNA molecules it makes, including messenger RNA.
Applying the new understanding of plants’ photoprotection mechanisms, Niyogi and his collaborators are identifying ways to help improve food crop productivity.

Blood drive Friday in Rogers City
With the cooperation of the Rogers City High School’s Key Club and the Kiwanis Club, Versiti Blood Center of Michigan will host a blood drive in Rogers City on Friday.

Alpena library hosts adult book club
Last month, Alpena County Library Book Club members discussed three Native American authors Louise Erdrich of the Chippewa nation, Leslie Marmon Silko of the Laguna Pueblo nation, and N. Scott Momaday of the Kiowa Gourd Dance Society and their contributions to literature. For the upcoming March meeting, book club members are encouraged to read a book of their choice by one of these authors.
