NEW DELHI: India’s largest two-wheeler maker Hero MotoCorp has decided to suspend manufacturing at all its plants in light of the ongoing surge in spread of Covid-19 across the country. The shutdown, which is temporary and includes the global parts centre (GPC), is a first by a two-wheeler maker in this financial year. Last year, around this time, all automakers had to shut their plant and offices for a month due to the mandatory nationwide lockdown.

Rajiv Bajaj, the outspoken managing director of Bajaj Auto, on Monday warned a hard lockdown would lead to the absence of medical attention to the sick who are suffering from other ailments.
Bajaj told television channels that 95 per cent of those testing positive are either asymptomatic or have mild symptoms. Governments, therefore, should not impose lockdowns that affect the livelihood of thousands.

Retail sales of passenger vehicles maintained growth in March with more than 2.79 lakh units sold, data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) showed. The figure was not strictly comparable with the year-earlier period, when sales were halted by the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown.
Notwithstanding the lower base, overall vehicle sales slumped 28.6% to about 16.49 lakh units. Two-wheelers sales shrank by more than a third to about 11.95 lakh units, while three-wheeler deliveries halved to 38,034 units. Retail sales of commercial vehicles contracted 42% from a year earlier to 67,372 units in March.
