Editor’s note: This is the third of a six-part series on gas and service stations of Gardner.
Before the current Route 2 was built in 1963, the old Route 2 in and out of Gardner headed from the Westminster line down East Broadway and then out to Templeton via West Broadway. Both thoroughfares featured numerous gas stations in their day.
East Broadway
80 East Broadway – Kendall’s Service Station. Harry Kendall operated a gas station at this location the longest from 1952 to 1955. Initially, it was brothers Stan and Elroy Pettengill who ran Stan and Roy’s Service Station there in 1946. Later, it was Shell Oil Co., Richard Brothers Service Station and a business owned by Raymond Bourn in 1950.

With apologies to Charles Dickens, this is “A Tale of Two ADUs” – accessory dwelling units – one built from the ground up, the other dropped from the sky.
Both are in Los Altos, where it has become easier to build ADUs thanks to statewide legislation effective January 2020. These days only a building permit and related permits are required, with no discretionary approval with public notice.
One was installed recently by the homeowners as a residence for their daughter and son-in-law. The other was for the homeowners themselves, allowing their daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter to occupy the main house.

It was 2020 that was the actual Year of the Rat according to the Chinese zodiac, but 2021 is also looking pretty good for the rodents in various parts of Canada.
Rat sightings have doubled in Alberta recently, and now word of an increase in car repair shop visits due to rat problems is coming in from Vancouver Island.

CHEK News in Victoria, B.C. reports the animals are causing damage to the soy-lined wires under the hoods of local cars in record numbers. One of the mechanics they spoke to about the issue is Wade McPhedrain of Wade’s Auto Works in Courtenay. He says he sees three or four rat-damage cases come through his shop each week.
