Before the current Route 2 was built in 1963, the old Route 2 in and out of Gardner headed from the Westminster line down East Broadway and then out to Templeton via West Broadway. Harry Kendall operated a gas station at this location the longest from 1952 to 1955. Initially, it was brothers Stan and Elroy Pettengill who ran Stan and Roy’s Service Station there in 1946. Later, it was Shell Oil Co., Richard Brothers Service Station and a business owned by Raymond Bourn in 1950.
