Single enforcement body - REC reaction
The government has officially announced that it will be creating a single enforcement body to protect the rights of workers and clamp down on bad practice in the labour market.
This will see the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority, the Employment Agency Standards Inspectorate and HMRC’s National Minimum Wage Enforcement combined into a single body – more detail can be found here.
Responding to the announcement, Kate Shoesmith, Deputy CEO of the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC), said:
“It s good to hear that the government is starting to move forward with its plan to create a single labour market enforcement body – something we have long asked for. This single body should encourage closer collaboration between the different strands of labour market enforcement and make it easier for workers to redress issues. Jobs vacancies in the UK are soaring but there are not enough workers to fill them, a report suggests.
The easing of Covid restrictions and reopening of various sectors meant demand for workers rose at its fastest rate in May for more than 23 years, according to a KPMG survey.
But the number of staff available to fill those jobs declined at the quickest rate since 2017.
KPMG called on the government and firms to address skills gaps.
Workers were especially needed in IT and computing, which has been a long-term trend, as well as hospitality, the survey found.
