New Caledonia independence parties look set to hold a majority in the territory s new government, following the collapse of the power-sharing body led by conservative President Thierry Santa.
Five members of the administration, representing the pro-independence groups UC-FLNKS and UNI, the Union nationale pour l indépendance, resigned earlier this month, as the government debated its COVID-19 impacted budget and the future of nickel mining in the French territory.
Under the 1998 Noumea Accord, which came after bouts of violence over the issue of independence, New Caledonia is run by a power sharing government made up of French loyalists and pro-independence politicians.

Fijian diplomat serving in Geneva, Ambassador Nazhat Shameem Khan has been elected President of the United Nations Human Rights Council, in a secret ballot Friday.
All 47 members of the Geneva-based human rights body cast their vote to appoint its president for 2021 – the Council’s 15th annual cycle.
Ambassador Khan is Fiji’s Permanent Representative of the Republic to the United Nations Office at Geneva. She will preside over the UN body for 2021.
Her presidency takes effect immediately and joins the Ambassadors of the Bahamas, Sudan and Netherlands, who were elected vice-presidents of the Council in December, to serve on the Council Bureau for the current year. The election of the fourth vice-president, from the Eastern European Group, will take place following negotiations within the Group.
