Lucky the cat recovering after being found with a broken leg, nursing three kittens in the woods

OTTAWA Lucky the cat is recovering from a surgery to amputate her leg after she was found fending for herself and nursing her kittens, while dealing with a broken paw. The Ottawa Humane Society says the injured cat was found nursing her three kittens in the woods late last month. Ottawa Bylaw Services officers picked her up and rushed her to an overnight emergency veterinary clinic. The following day, Lucky and her three kittens were transferred to the Ottawa Humane Society critical care, where X-rays revealed the cat s leg was beyond repair. The Ottawa Humane Society thinks Lucky may have been struck by a vehicle. To improve her quality of life and reduce her pain, veterinarians amputated her leg the next day.

Gerda the cat recovering after being found frozen in cold Ottawa winter

OTTAWA A two-year-old cat lost its leg and tail after being found frozen on a porch in Ottawa earlier this month. The Ottawa Humane Society says Gerda is recovering after being rushed to the clinic three weeks ago near death. Gerda s body temperature and blood sugar were too low to be measured. She was emaciated and dehydrated, said the humane society in a statement. Her tail hung limp and one of her hind legs was broken. OHS veterinarians estimated that if Gerda had spent minutes longer exposed to the cold, she may not have survived. The humane society says Gerda s tail was severely wounded and her fractured leg bone had broken through the skin.
