Area school kids can enjoy Day on the Wild Side

The Beacon The Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District, in cooperation with Winous Point Marsh Conservancy, ODNR Division of Wildlife and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, are inviting area school kids to spend a “A Day on the Wild Side” at the prestigious Winous Point Hunt Club in Port Clinton. The popular outing is for young students in the fifth grade through the eighth grade, with the camp to be held on Thursday, July 22 from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. Parents should apply as soon as possible for the special camp and its many outdoor activities, with the camp limited to 60 participants.

The meeting will be held in the Hub located at Oak Harbor High School, 11681 W. Ohio 163, Oak Harbor (formerly the library). The regular April 27 board meeting will follow the work session.

Talk About Oak Harbor: Tis the season for litter clean up Linda Hartigan Spring is here. Flowers are blooming and the grass is greening. Unfortunately, we now also see the accumulation of trash along our area roads. The recent high winds have contributed some to the collection. Most of it comes from vehicles as folks finish their drink, cigarette or snack. Litter was especially bad at the intersection of Oak Harbor Southeast Road and Ohio 19. Then about two weeks ago, my husband and I noted it was completely cleared of trash. Beautiful work by someone. I was hoping to thank the person or group who took the initiative and cleaned up that area. However, I do not know who that was. Neither does the Ottawa Sandusky Seneca County Joint Solid Waste District Communication and Outreach Specialist Tim Hassinger.

Unique ONWR breakfast celebrates National Ag Week

The Beacon To celebrate agriculture and honor local farm producers, the Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District and other local agricultural agencies and sponsors are celebrating National Agriculture Week by hosting an Agriculture Community Breakfast. The breakfast will be held on Friday, March 19 at 8:30 a.m. at Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge in Oak Harbor. The cost for the Drive-Through Continental Breakfast is $5. The event is open to all individuals and businesses that eat meat, fruit, vegetables and bread – items grown by farmers! Come to the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge main parking lot to receive a bagged breakfast from Coffee Express and be directed toward the custom driving tour.
