Weekly Auburn roundup: Joyce Kimeli declared a national champion

Auburn’s Joyce Kimeli brought home both a gold and a bronze medal from the National Indoor Championship, helping Auburn to a 10th place finish.
The track and field team had the best week out of all the Auburn program, although the equestrian team beat a ranked team and the soccer team completed a “hat trick” of three wins against Georgia.
Other teams dealt with some losses, although many suffered them against ranked teams. Here’s a summary of how Auburn’s teams did this week:

Freshman Ben Shelton sat on the bench after Tennessee s Luca Wedenmann paved the way in a 6-0 first set blowout. During the intermission, assistant coach Scott Perelman approached Shelton.
“You got this guy,” Perelman exclaimed. “You’re still on top of him. Let’s get it right here.”
Shelton took the words to heart. With his chin up, Shelton stole five straight games
County appoints two new department heads

EDWARDSVILLE Two new department heads were approved Wednesday by a divided Madison County Board.
Adam Walden was approved as Madison County engineer, replacing Mark Gvillo, who retired in November. Michael Bold was named the county’s facilities director, taking over from Rob Schmidt, who left to work for the Madison County Transit District in July.
Voting against both appointments were Democratic board members Michael “Doc” Holliday and Bruce Malone of Alton, Matt King of East Alton, Chris Hankins of Pontoon Beach, Jack Minner of Edwardsville, Nick Petrillo of Granite City and Gussie Glasper of Madison.

LAWTON, Okla. (TNN) - Fort Sill’s 77th Army Band filmed their annual Christmas concert at McMahon Memorial Auditorium this week.
The band usually performs in front of a live audience, but this year, they’ll be streaming the performances for audiences instead due to COVID.
Staff Sgt. Adam Walton said although it feels strange to play without an audience, it’s important to give the community extra holiday cheer with some music.
