For the past four years, LGBTQ Americans have withstood a barrage of attacks on multiple fronts, perpetrated by an administration that displayed a blatant disregard for their dignity, health, safety, and basic human rights. Even on its way out the door, the Trump administration attempted to undermine nondiscrimination protections for transgender students and signal to taxpayer-funded service providers that they can refuse to serve LGBTQ people and families. Now, President-elect Joe Biden and a Democratic majority in Congress are set to inherit the mess the Trump administration created, providing LGBTQ Americans with an opportunity to see the injustices of the last administration rectified, their constitutional rights upheld, and their dignity and well-being further enshrined. This will help ensure future administrations can’t undo the hard-fought progress of past decades.

Stephen F. Austin State Universityâs Dr. Hollie Gammel Smith will take over temporarily for outgoing Dean of Students Dr. Adam Peck when he departs for Illinois State University in January, the university announced Friday.
Smith is a long-time staff member who currently serves as the assistant dean of student affairs programs overseeing the universityâs Center for Career and Professional Development and spirit teams. During the pandemic, sheâs led the universityâs COVID-19 contact tracing program, according to Fridayâs statement.
âAfter joining the SFA staff in 2005, Smith was named assistant dean in 2011, where she supervises a department with 16 full-time staff members, six graduate assistants and numerous student employees,â according to the statement. â(She) also serves as an adjunct professor of psychology and educational leadership.â
