We must continue to listen and respect the survivors of the residential school system.
That’s the message being delivered by the City of Dryden in response to the horrific discovery of the remains of 215 children buried at a former residential school in Kamloops, British Columbia.
Deputy Mayor Norm Bush is a member of the ‘Working Circle’, aimed at bringing the Indigenous and non-Indigenous community closer together.
“We wanted to reach out and recognize that people were suffering mentally from this discovery and we wanted to make sure that the community knew we were with them going through this difficult time.”
Lakehead University
Mixed reaction from the President of Lakehead University in Thunder Bay to approved legislation to make the Northern Ontario School of Medicine a stand-alone University.
Dr. Moira McPherson says they still have grave concerns about the means by which this decision was made, claiming the university, the Senate, faculty, staff, healthcare providers, Indigenous communities, and regional business leaders weren’t properly consulted.
She says, “Since the introduction of this legislation, Lakehead and many community partners have sought to build awareness of how this decision will impact program accreditation, costs to taxpayers and students, existing research, as well as university and community partnerships.
